Civic Engagement in Action Series:

eCitizenship: New Tools, New Strategies, New Spaces

Description

Facebook®, wikis, blogs and a host of other technology-based tools are transforming the ways that citizens interact with others and with government. Indeed, technology is transforming our democracy. How do we begin to understand this transformation and to find ways for colleges and universities to use these tools to prepare informed, engaged citizens.

Goals

This three-year initiative is a partnership of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and the Center for the Study of Citizenship at Wayne State University. Still in the beginning phases, the participating thirty-five institutions in this initiative will work together to study how emerging technologies, particularly social networks, support and facilitate civic and political engagement. The main goal of the initiative to provide insights into and strategies for engaging undergraduates in the use of social networks and technology tools for civic purposes. Those strategies can then be broadly employed to prepare undergraduates for lives of engagement and participation.

Mission

The mission of the eCitizenship Initiative is to prepare students for knowledgeable and effective citizenship in the digital age.

With VoiceThread, group conversations are collected and shared in one place from anywhere in the world. All with no software to install. A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.

Google Moderator

Participants in a workshop, training session, keynote, or presentation can submit their questions or feedback before, during, and after the event via traditional text or with a YouTube video. Participants can also vote on the questions or ideas they like best; consequently, the most popular questions move to the top of the moderation queue. These responses and questions can also be easily shared via email, Twitter, or Facebook.

Splashlife

Melissa Helmbrecht of Splashlife was our Keynote Speaker for #CivAg10.

Splashlife’s mission is to help our members get from here to there—whether “there” is a cleaner planet, a more satisfying career, a healthier body, a sense of meaning, or just a good chuckle. Think you can help us do that? We do, too. Add your voice to Splashlife.com.

Blimee

Blimee plans on bringing the news back to the street and recreating the town crier, town hall and town square. By using digital displays that are located all around your neighborhood and making the experience interactive by allowing users to tweet short messages up to the screen and share their opinions about happenings in their location.

Neighbors Forums

E-Democracy.org hosts a growing number of neighborhood-wide Issues Forums we simply call "Neighbors Forums." They are big "C" community life and complement our city-wide big "P" politics forums. The area/population covered is determined by the volunteer forum managers, but in general we like forums that either conform to the service areas of neighborhood councils or are based on a strong sense of local identity.

Classroom 2.0

Classroom 2.0 is a social network for those interested in Web 2.0 and Social Media in education.

Syinc

Syinc is a youth group in Singapore that brings together people to seek innovative solutions for social change. We work to enable young people as the change-agents in our community.

Participedia

Participedia is a tool for strengthening democracy. Based on a wiki platform, its main content consists of user-generated articles which describe and assess participatory governance throughout the world. For instance, there will be articles on the British Columbia Citizens’ Assembly of 2004, consensus conferences in Denmark, participatory budgeting in Porto Alegre and other cities, local school council governance in Chicago, municipal evaluation meetings in China, and the People’s Campaign for Democratic Decentralization (under the Panchayati Raj reforms) in Kerala, India. In addition, there will be articles on participatory methods, such as deliberative polling, citizens' assemblies, and participatory budgeting, as well as articles about the organizations that sponsor, implement, and study participatory governance. Over time, we hope Participedia will garner hundreds and perhaps thousands of such articles.

AthenaBridge

AthenaBridge is a Web-based application that can engage thousands of citizens in a single conversation to discuss any of our nation’s toughest problems. Today’s issues are complex, and solutions require interdisciplinary collaboration. AthenaBridge is interested in partnering with eCitizenship Schools. Please contact Lucas Cioffi if you would like to explore this opportunity.

Proposing a Network for Engagement

The Center for the Study of Citizenship and Media Genesis propose the use the Media Genesis’ Power of Peace Network (PPN) platform (developed for UNESCO) as a model and a prototype to create a civic engagement network. A civic engagement version of PPN would provide a space for faculty, leaders in student services, and students themselves to meet, share, collaborate and promote civic engagement among ADP colleges and universities. In Providence, a rump group of eCitizenship schools proposed to make a network a key eCitizenship initiative. This presentation is the next step in its development.

On the Commons

On the Commons is launching a story mapping project to document and give voice to stories of change and transformation. Please share your story by creating an account or logging in and uploading video footage, photos or a written summary. Putting our stories on a map reminds us that that we are not isolated in our work, and it helps us see collective pathways we’re forging towards a joyful, equitable and abundant future. Search on keywords or categories to find stories most relevant to your work and interests.
